Yes, currently images ALWAYS go through Lab. We intend to change that though 
when we redesign how the internal pipe works. First steps have been taken, but 
this is probably going to take a while.

About that PDF, please keep in mind that it is leaving out some details so 
it's not a complete view of our pipe. It was meant as a simplified description 
to answer some specific questions in a bug report.
