Rob, you could accomplish that with symlinks and a template .xmp
I copy and rename all my DCIM folders as they are and add a "symlinks"
folder pointing to my 100CANON or 101,103 etc. In that folder all I have
are symlinks and .xmp files and I can make copies of the symlinks folder
and segregate the file types like raws and jpgs, I can then also make
specific selection folders of what I want so I maintain multiple
collections of the same files. My original purpose behind this was to be
able to have create a unique naming scheme, <name>-<iteration #>-<folder
#><sequence#>.<format>.
In practice this has made it possible to preserve all my data
nondestructively. I could also change the permissions of the originals so
they are read only, or even store them separately in another file system
with symlinks replacing the original file structure, and it would achieve
exactly what you've described.
