There's been a discussion over on Cyberia-l about this.
British libel law hasn't evolved the American position that
truth is a defense against libel lawsuits, and they're apparently
quite cooperative about letting non-Brits sue other non-Brits
if there's any excuse for UK locality.

Insert appropriate comments about national boundaries, speedbumps,
information superhighways, reputation capital, and use of anonymous remailers 
when you really want to flame people....  A bad lot all around.

(Hmmm - UK law probably also doesn't have the exceptions about
libeling public figures, so I probably can't say that the Law Lords
are ravingly clueless or have really chomped on their toes on this one.)
