There are many actions the police perform that *I* am
perfectly content with, or even enthused about. I *like it* when the
police arrest a rapist or a bank robber. I am pleased when they bust
someone for driving while intoxicated, or when there is an accident
and they show up to help clean up the mess, route traffic etc.
The problem really *isn't* the police. We (through our local
governments) hire them, and task them with enforcing the laws. That
they go beyond the laws is bad, but it's the politicians *we the
people* keep electing who push them to do these things. It the voters
and politicians who don't provide enough money to hire the best and
the brightest, so we wind up with cops who had a choice between
wearing a Police uniform, or a McDonalds uniform.
It's not the cops, it's their masters. Most *street* cops are
more than willing to live and let live--they don't mind Joe Average
packing heat. They don't really give rats ass if some college kid
wants to "blow a J". However like many other people, when their boss
says jump, they do.
This isn't to say that there aren't some who are just plain
rotten--there are, and they do need, if not killing at least repeated
brutal beatings--but they are protected by their handlers.

Today good taste is often erroneously rejected as old-fashioned
because ordinary man, seeking approval of his so-called personality,
prefers to follow the dictates of his own peculiar style rather than
submit to any objective criterion of taste.--Jan Tschichold
