I'm no mail list expert but couldn't the "filtering" YECCH be done by
separating the list address into two pieces?

The address for incoming traffic for new threads is cypherpunks<random
#>@xyz.com. The address is changed periodically ( or aperiodically if
you prefer ). Stick the current address in a mailto: on some pages
somewhere. This is the address you send to if you want to start a new
thread. It makes the spammers get lots of bounced mail. I don't think
you'd want to mail the address out to all list subscribers on a regular
basis. That might just make it easier to automate the spamming. In fact
you might want to obscure the address in a changing manner where it is
presented so that automating picking it out would be difficult.

You might need a slight overlap where for some period the new address
and the previous one coexist. That would give people who pick the old
address from the source at the last minute some time to compose and
transmit their mail.

Responses to existing threads are sent to plain old [EMAIL PROTECTED]
It is used as the reponse address for all outgoing mail headers. This is
where anything that is not a direct response to an existing thread is
discarded.

This doesn't restrict content or sender or level of anonymity used but
it does make it a bit tougher on the spammers. It seems like it might
lower the volume of spam.

My half-penny's worth.

.....

I don't subscribe because of the volume but I do read the list on
inet-one and I used to enjoy it. Here's my little statistical analysis
of this week's traffic. I counted what appeared to be outright SPAM.
That doesn't mean that what remains is guaranteed to be of value - it
could be the usual officer friendly wanking off while trolling for
internet high crimes and misdemeanors or amateur physics hour - but at
least it's <possibly> readable.

total - ~150
outright spam - ~ 51 \
discussion of spam - ~ 27 / ~50%
freshman physics - ~ 8

It's pretty awful but now I don't feel too bad about adding to the
freshman physics threads.

Well thanks for the offer, Tit, but I find NASDAQ enough of a

  Hello officer pervy.

I know this was discussed heavily a while back but I guess I filtered it
out ( manually ). Where the hell does this shit come from? Who should be
hung for this? There are some nice cottonwoods by the river, I've got
some rope. Anyone care to volunteer the use of their horse for a good
old-fashioned necktie party?
