Mono is another of those things that thinks cygwin is only good for - -mno-cygwin. Go figure. But you do NOT need a windows mono to build a Cygwin version: http://cygwin-ports.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/cygwin-ports/ports/trunk/lang/mono/ No, it's not current (mono is now at 2.4), and no, I haven't gotten around to dealing with it for cygwin 1.7 yet, but it should be a start.
