'python' is a symlink to the actual version-numbered executable. Dos
prompts don't understand cygwin symlinks.
/ $ ls -la /usr/bin/python*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 dk Users 13 Jan 1 22:07 /usr/bin/python.exe -> python2.4.exe
-rwxr-x---+ 1 dk Users 5120 May 18 2006 /usr/bin/python2.4.exe
