You should find and study a good reference on shell quoting. I first learned about it from chapter 9 of Unix Power Tools, but I'm sure the bash manual also describes it well. Unfortunately, in general it can be quite a PITA to keep track of file names with spaces in them, especially when you start working with lists of file names. But with practice it gets easier.
