FWIW, there is several ways around such a problem.
1) Create a plain tar archive,
(unless you can get the multivolume stuff going - creating a splitted
archive on a spare partition)
2) 'split' the archive
3) 'dd' (or anything e.g. 'cdrecord') the pieces onto any media.
but you might want to fight with tar... ;-)
