Bash, when invoked as a login shell, will execute ~/.bash_profile, if present, instead of ~/.profile. I usually symlink ~/.bash_profile to ~/.bashrc... Alternatively, make ~/.bash_profile a one-line script with ". .bashrc" or "source .bashrc". OTOH, ~/.profile is used by both bash and sh, so you should only put sh-compatible commands into it.
