No, it cannot start external programs. The error message is bash: /usr/bin/ls.exe: Invalid argument All internal commands I have tested work. echo $PATH shows the expected output. Setting VAR= reverts to the normal behavior. Odd you cannot $ strace /bin/echo oops to figure out where it fails.
