HOW do I get old messages from the mailing list?

Where do I find the relevant message number for starters?
e.g: I have hard to believe that
[EMAIL PROTECTED] <=>
www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2001-12/msg00042.html
would be true as the message number is so low
(wasn't the ML started a lot earlier than Dec 2001? i.e. '96/'97 or so...).
The link above contains the message I expect to have sent to my mailbox.
Nothing found in the FAQ,
