Hello Good Folk (no, I'm not implying that you're fairies masquerading as
computer geniuses ;-).
This is a cry for help, and it's admittedly not squarely cygwin-centered,
but tangentially related. I'm operating on an assumption that I think is
sound, which is that Cygwin users know a lot about how Windows works (or
doesn't). I've been struggling with this for months. My Windows 11 computer
is toggled to set the LAN connection as >>Private network (Active) /
Firewall is off<<. According to that, I should be able to connect from a
remote computer on the LAN to any port I need. But no.

As far as I discern, Microsoft lies about this. If I don't make an
exception for port 22 (SSH), for example, I can't login from another system
(I have, erm, several - mostly running Gnu/Linux).

In the case of distcc the standard (default) port is 3632. I added that
program and port to the exceptions list but when I run a compilation on the
other Cygwin machine I see distcc on that machine giving the message:

distcc[18828] ERROR: nonblocking connect to 192.168.1.9:3632 failed:
Connection refused

Lots of mostly useless info follows.

Any suggestions? e.g. should I try to set up distcc to tunnel through an
SSH connection?

He's earthy, he's pithy, he's ...a bit astringent.
Think of him more as a "topical antiseptic" than as a snack.
