I reinstalled 8.17-01 to perform these diagnostics, and now cannot reproduce
the problem. Figures.

Please disregard earlier bug report. (At least, until after I send this out
and the problem suddenly resurfaces.)
Glad it's working now.
Watch out for Murphy, altitude, solar flares, high power devices nearby, and
radiation sources pointed at your system operating during upgrades ;^>
