Problem here ...........^^^^^^^ Literally it means "gcc please also look for libraries in directory -lX11", effectively gobbling up -lX11 (no, you don't get a message because the directory -lX11 does not exist!). Either a bug in the configure file (& bros.) for aplus, or it expects you to specify some variable that has to be expanded after the -L, maybe the path to the X libraries? Try configure --help.
