Other threads [1] from people who have taken this course have shown that the windows update-on-reboot doesn't always work, in which case you might still be running cygwin 1.7.9 inadvertently (and coreutils 8.15 requires cygwin 1.7.10 for things like ls to work). What does 'uname -a' say; and if it is still 1.7.9, then you need to either rename /bin/cygwin1.dll.new to cygwin1.dll, or rerun setup.exe and reinstall cygwin1.dll, but either way, make sure that this time you really have stopped all cygwin processes first.
