My musing in the above thread was apparently incorrect. This has nothing to do with my buggy fifo implementation. I did a little more checking on this and the problem is that something like this doesn't work right now in cygwin: echo hello >/proc/self/fd/1 when it should. Implementing this isn't too tricky.
