similar issues with some other archive types I tried - not recorded as I was
testing latest lesspipe update installed and trying to use gvim/ gview/
less.vim for comparisons and other work with various compressed archives and
files.
Rolled back to previous release 9.1.1054 and issues went away.

This seems an upstream issue and 9.1.1825 is the last stable,
more or less , see https://www.vim.org/download.php
I will look to put latest tags as test, but vim is making 10 tags every two
days, https://github.com/vim/vim/tags
so not easy to follow.
Yes - commit patch level releases do not make it easy to assess impacts.
