One annoying thing perhaps to look out for, that I have noticed on rare occasions, is that ssh-agent can seem to get wedged somehow, which causes all ssh commands to apparently hang trying to talk to it.
Other than that, if 'ssh alive' doesn't work but you can access sourceware via other protocols (e.g. https), then the issue is at a lower level than I can help you with and we'll need to talk to overseers.
