Thanks for spotting that. I tracked the problem down to the "source" command, which I use in .screenrc to load default settings. It makes screen hang. When I remove it, and with the patches you provided, screen 5.0.0 works fine. I opened https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/index.php?67008 about that problem. Thanks for your help, Takashi.
