My own solution is to have a bare repo for all my packages that registers all my packages as submodules with the repos at sourceware as upstream. A little bit of Git configuration makes it really easy to clone any existing package into a new worktree if or when I want or need to look at it. Since the cygport repos do not contain many or large files (and also not much history in many cases) and probably packaged into just one packfile, there really isn't much point in not doing a full clone.
