Yeah, this seems like the right thing to do.
Unlike old Windows versions, MSDOS / DosBOX is still an environment
appreciated by enthusiasts to run old games, and having a cross-compiler for
it is a nice thing. I wouldn't think it's harmful to keep them around.

djgpp-gcc-core 5.4.0-1
are much older than the current DJGPP releases quoted above, and there are beta
versions available, probably due to lack of testers.
If you are running DOSbox etc., you can install and use DJGPP, but looks like
Windows 10 KB4088776 for [20]1709 [20]17H2 killed off native 32-bit DPMI support.
