I have pushed some patches from a user on IRC to the playground branch that enable updating opencv to latest upstream. There are some unresolved issues that need some more attention:
1. Both OpenEXR and protobuf get captive builds via bundled sources instead of using the system libraries. OpenEXR may not be up-to-date enough on Cygwin, although I haven't spotted any attempt to detect it during configuration. The bundled protobuf is older than the one on Cygwin and has a (probably irrelevant for this case) CVE pending. 2.
