For Cygwin I understand that, but you mean to say that *setup* will be able to install a file with a "*:<>|? (The : is the most common case, usually within API docs, for obvious reasons.) If the only thing I have to worry about not installing is case-insensitive files in the same directory, I know of three cases (WindowMaker, gnome-chess, and liblouis) among 1650+ sources.
