I agree. Besides, based on the question on the main list - how is an independent distributor supposed to know if cygwin is installed, so they don't become a 3PP? If we have something in the registry, the answer is obvious - cygwin is installed. If we don't, then they have to hunt for likely candidate locations (and will probably guess wrong, becoming a 3PP even though they were trying to play nice and search for a previous installation). | Maybe the | registry value should use a version number, so that we can have two | parallel installation again, should we ever release a -3 distro... I think we need a version number, and a directory where the installation was done. But we don't need a full mount table.
