No, no, it's just me being dense here. I don't know how that happened to my system and I don't remember doing something like that, but the /usr/bin/msgfmt on my machine was a simple (but wrong) script: #!/bin/sh return 0 Embarrassing but true: It didn't occur to me that a fake-msgfmt might not be the intended functionality... After I reinstalled the correct msgfmt.exe from gettext-devel, everything worked as expected again.
