The discussion on this list was that auto-installation in /etc/profile.d, while possible, would probably elicit complaints along the lines of "why does bash take so much longer to load now?" (even on my 2.5 GHz machine, it adds more than a second to the start of every interactive shell). I guess now we will have to see how many complaints we get of "why doesn't bash_completion get sourced?" - -- Life is short - so eat dessert first!
