As I see it, there is no conceptual difference between $SystemRoot and a drive, hence I suggested /cygdrive/WINDOWS. If /cygdrive is inherently magical, then that presents a problem. If it isn't, then whatever mechanisms are used to create /cygdrive/c (mknod, mounts, magic, etc) can be used for this as well (IMO).
