Hi a third time,
I found the issue. After ugly debugging code, I found out that site.py
was calling for a sitecustomize module, that was in my home directory
for some reason, and that set the encoding. This sitecustomize.py was
in Evennia code. I don't know why Python used it. Anyway, I deleted
the directory and Python 2 is now back to using ASCII. Now I'll be able
to work and have it accept utf-8 in a consistent manner!
