FWIW, I think that some of your problems probably stem from using an old cabal-install compiled against an old Cabal, which assumes that -static is the default and so doesn't say "-static -prof" when trying to build static profiling libraries. But you're right that we should fix the prof_dyn way, we should also give Cabal a flag to build it.
