I don't know about other people, but I try to get an intuitive feel of a
problem, whether it be mathematical, statistical, or whatever, before I launch
into a computer based solution.

For one thing, it keeps me from relying on the tools I use completely.
Second, it lets me hone the way I grasp problems.
And third, it provides some nice self-gratification if my feel of it was
right.
