Correct. Gamin is based on the native inotify Linux kernel API.
Then unmaintained state of these two projects scares me.
It is highly unlikely that the inotify kernel API will ever change, or go away. In the unlikely event that a successor kernel API to inotify emerges some day, a comparable userspace library will be sure to follow.
Checking the dependency database in Fedora, Gnome depends on Gamin. If Gamin ever goes away, the entire Gnome stack is going to come crashing down. The Gnome tools[1] are much more vested in Gamin's existence than I am, and they'll be forced to support it themselves, if it ever comes to that.
So, I see no reason to worry about Gamin. [1] "Tools" does not refer to software, here. Figure it out.
