Now I am unable to see the Test directory inside of Thunderbird when I go to Subscribe.

Questions:

1. Why is this the case

Thunderbird might be configured, by default, to show "subscribed" folders only, where "subscribed" refers to some unrelated, misdesigned IMAP feature. If Thunderbird did not create the folder, it won't see it. Go into account settings, and find the setting to show all folders, not just subscribed ones.

2. Secondly, do I even have to make this a system group. Why isn't this just a regular Unix groupĀ  ? If this is required, it might be beneficial to actually include a step in the instructions showing users the desired way to create this.

I can be any group in /etc/groups. Doesn't matter what its numerical groupid is.

The label "system", referred in the documentation refers to system as opposed to "virtual".
