When messages are copied to a different folder, the files get created with the default process umask. With standard maildirs, which themselves should carry mode 0700, the additional group and world read permissions are irrelevant. Certain boutique, custom server configurations employ shared folders with access controlled by the default filesystem permissions -- there the standard file permissions are required for it to work.
