I am having an issue that seems courier-imap related but I'm open to
suggestions.

Issue:
When moving many messages (>1000) from a folder (such as inbox, junk,
anything) to any other folder, all at once, imapd spawns multiple
processes and >100,000 files are created in the /tmp folder of the
destination folder.

Server System Configuration:
courier-imap accessing Maildir's over an NFS mount. (Just ask for
anything else needed)

Client:
any computer running thunderbird (have not tried any others) accessing
server via IMAP

More description of issue:
The server runs fine for small moves (i.e. <100 messages at a time.) and
general message access. however when moving many messages, from the
client side it just endlessly says "Moving messages to INBOX.Trash" (or
whatever the destination folder is.)

When this happens, on the server side you start to see multiple imapd
instances with status D (1 instance is expected, but I'll see 10
instances with the same status.) Also, if you look at the number of
files in the destination folder, none are in new or cur, but files seem
to be endlessly created in tmp.

Background:
The same config has worked great for the past 3 years on a stand-alone
system (i.e. no NFS)

Any thoughts?

Eric Schultz
