Oops -- sorry, I have to take that back.

Once I've used DrakConnect and entered "localhost.localdomain", Gnome starts 
complaining as before.

I don't know that the entry should be added to "hosts", in light of other 
comments. But Gnome's problems with the way the network is set up should be 
resolved somehow.

In fact, the entry is missing in /etc/hosts :
127.0.0.1        localhost

I had to add localhost.localdoamin manually.
