Your reality differs from mine. I have used an installation with swedish as my 
language as i had problem with gnumeric, so be prepared.

When I run as root, draksound I get: (my translation)
No soundcard could be found in the computer. Check that the soundcard has 
support from Linux and that it is properly fastened.

Observe: If you have an ISA card you must use sndconfig &c.

Then I checked in /etc/modules.conf and found that nothing was introduced from 
sndconfig. I then made a copy from my modules.conf from 9.0 and did install 
realplayer and exactly as for the last three weeks I got sound for about 1 
second then silence for 5 sec and then 1 sec sound &c. 

If you want me to look at more places please give suitable instructions.
