I'll add that, not only do the icons get rearranged automatically in a vertical line, their "bounding boxes" have also increased in size. Click on a 48x48 icon, and you'll see that the dotted line around it seems much bigger. The icon text is also farther from the icon itself than usual. Selecting a different icon size from K --> Configuration --> KDE --> LookNfeel --> Icons will reset the bounding box to its normal size (even if you revert to the default, in my case 48).
