I've been having problems printing to an HP Deskjet 970C using the Foomatic+hpijs drivers ever since an update to printer-drivers a couple weeks ago. I had this happen once before due to some interface change, and the solution was to remove the print queue and re-add it.
However, now when I go to re-add it through the cups web interface, I only see CUPS+Gimp-Print listed, not anything with hpijs, which is what I had before. Without the hpijs I can't get double-sided printing. I have libijs0-0.34-33mdk installed.
