There was an error when generating initrd try to do a :
/sbin/mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.21pre4-4mdk.img 2.4.21pre4-4mdk
and see the errors
There is an error when regenerating lilo, you may have to check your
/etc/lilo.conf
Compiling from kernel-source had the same problem
