install of the rpms. Have you tried manually running update-menus as
root? If it's complaining about missing .desktop files, that could very
well be the culprit.

and hey presto its working again
or, perhaps the code in update-menus that generates the konqueror.desktop file is broke. If copying the file fixes the problem, then it does have to do with whatever code creates the applnk-mdk/ directory tree.
