I may be mistaken, but my impression of Mandrake's response to United
Linux was that they did not like the business model. I believe UL is
trying to proprietize quite a bit of their distribution. It is Love's
brainchild anyway, and I have never really liked his distro's model.

Not a bad idea... as long as it was simple enough for novices (which I
believe is this next big wave. Many people get so excited when I talk
about all of the software you get with linux and at what cost.)
I still like the idea of a central database, maybe make a plugin for the
web browsers to sync with the database. Since Mandrake uses primarily
open-source programs, I don't see why they could not work with the
programs maintainers to coordinate this feature.

always the issue isn't it.... I am trying to light a fire here though. I
think it would be a way that would allow Mandrake to really step out in
front of the crowd. In the past people would be interested in linux but
run to the safety and familiarity of windows, however things appear
changing and fast as I get people who are now ready to take the plunge.
This would eliminate one of the biggest underlying issues of so many
different programs by making them more uniform.
