What's "normal" these days . . . I have an Adaptec 2940UW based controller (relatively old and OEM from Gateway) which appears to work without change using latest Cooker (and Beta3) - it shows up as AIC-7881U in harddrake and uses the stock aic-7xxx module.
I would recommend checking the Adaptec website for the latest firmware update for the card - check that you have the latest, and if not - update the card - this may help.
