Ok I've tried to hold back for most of this discussion but I'll toss in my 2
cents worth and take up a little of everyone's bandwidth. (My apologies to
those on slower connections for having to download this little rant!)

First and foremost, COOKER IS NOT A "STABLE" DISTRIBUTION. It is Mandrake's
very thoughtful way of letting the general public test their product and help
them in identifying bugs that would otherwise take months to discover.
Secondly, unlike commercial software, a lot of this software is written by a
programmer that is receiving absolutely no funding for his accomplishments.
If you understood the vast amount of open source code out there right now
you'd understand that it is virtually impossible for ANY distribution to keep
all their programs up to date. A self compiled install from a tar file is
often times better for a system than an RPM anyways... Like the developers
for Mandrake have said, when they put a security update on the servers, each
little program take a LOT of work to do because of the many versions that are
still considered important. In a perfect world everyone might be using the
newest 7.2 release and then maybe more could be done to upgrade programs more
often, but the simple fact is, it's not like that.

On that note I challenge those that are complaining to find a better
distribution with more features and the openess that can be found with
MandrakeSoft. My sincerest thanks for the team at Mandrake for putting out
what is IMHO the best and most up to date distribution to date. Good luck to
fellow cookers on finding and squashing all the bugs for the next great
release! =)
