You don't have to change anything in xinitrc. You have to use a
wmsession dir, not a single file, that is brought by mandrake_desk
package.
Any window manager, or any desktop-manager then add a file in this dir.
For gnome, this file is called 02gnome, and contains the following :

DESC=Gnome Environment
EXEC=/usr/bin/startgnome
