since mdk9.1, mandrake enable local APIC and ACPI.
some bioses do not like this and misconfigure network cards.
either boot with "noapic" or "acpi=off" or alternatively try mdk9.2 (newer
kernel have better acpi support and workaround more buggy bioses)

Realtek PCI cable modem card 8029AS was not recongized or working with 9.1 beta 3.
This card works with version 9.0 and is reconginzed and works when installed,
but not with Mandrake 9.1 beta 3 (or 1 or 2 for that matter)
