Summary: Time wizard does not allow to set local Time Server
Product: drakconf
Version: 9.2-3mdk
Platform: PC
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: drakconf
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Time Wizard in Server Configuration allows only few pre-selected ntp servers as
Primary and Secondary Time servers. There is no possibility to set my own local
ntp server IP address in this wizard. Nowadays when GPS devices are cheap and
easily available there are more and more local networks where local, usually
GPS-based time servers are used. This is good way to continue accurate
timekeeping even if Internet connection is lost for some time (maybe during some
attack).
It's not good also that all time servers in the list have only names not IP
addresses. Any malfunction or deliberate attack on DNS servers can also block
out timekeeping allowing manipulations with time on some local machines
(tampering with digital crime evidence etc.)
Possible solution: extend both lists of pre-selected Time Servers to include
"Other" where numeric IP address can be entered.
(Yes I know that I can manually edit ntpd configuration file; but this talk is
about Time Wizard).
