description:
This may be a kernel related problem, but the symptoms are that esd hangs,
hogging the sound channels and effectively stopping sound altogether.

I am using an Asus A7V8X motherboard that has a VT8235 southbridge chip (AC97
codec). If I start, for example gaim (macromedia flash plugin has the same
problem), it effectively kills esd. I have to re-start it to get sound again.
Sound works OK with all games, xmms etc, but not after esd goes awol.

In the eventualtity that the problem is with the OSS kernel module, we should
perhaps look at using ASLA instead (reportedly that has no know problems).
