Okay, still working with the install from Wednesday AM.

My CL-5446 video is built into the motherboard and can only be "soft"
disabled (i.e. no jumpers to kill it only BIOS). I put in a Voodoo3 2000
PCI, disabled the onboard controller, and started Linux. kudzu correctly
located the card and prompted to set it up. This created a couple of
issues, however:

 1) It reset my default runlevel from 3 to 5 without prompting. (shame!)

 2) It retained the 544x as the card name (puzzling).

 3) When I did get into X, I was at 640x480 despite having selected (and
    tested) a 1024x768 @ 24bpp mode

The other thing isn't exclusively a Mandrake issue, but an issue with X.
I have had problems since the inclusion of the generic Voodoo3 drivers in
X. If I configure for a Voodoo3, X breaks. I get a white screen with
bands of color, or wavy blue lines, or similar malfunctions. If I use the
Voodoo3 and configure for a more generic card (like the 5446), X works
perfectly.

I suspect it is related to the fact that I can't physically disable the
onboard video.
