I cannot help you in this matter as I do not use Windows nor am I familiar with any limitations within Windows regarding NEF files. However, I am surprised that your system will not read those files as they are standard Nikon RAW image files. I use Macs, and NEF files can be read by almost any graphics application that I have. No flaming intended, only surprise.
